Creature From Skull

For this assignment, we were instructed to make a creature from an already existing skull, similar to how paleontologists would try to recreate what dinosaurs looked like from their skulls. The only rule is we couldn't make the original animal.

I chose a fox skull, because I thought that you wouldn't expect a fox skull to look the way it is. I wanted a bit of a challenge.

Concept Art

I wanted to play around with fun tendrils and cartilage in this piece. I really wanted to make it unique, and look nothing like it's original creature. I went for an aquatic/amphibian vibe, and ultimately chose the one with the Angler-fish nose.

A work in progress piece of my creature in Z-brush. This is when I was deciding what to do for the back of the head. I actually ended up deciding on making aquatic looking ears where the original ears are.

With that, I put it into Substance Painter and made some textures that reminded me almost of amphibians and frogs. I carefully detailed the eyes to make them almost "bug out" at you, adding a bit more creepiness to this piece.
